Steve
Turner was born in Haleyville at the Mansco Manville Hospital. He started school
in 1956 at Natural Bridge in a one room school. He attended Lynn High School where
he played football, graduating in 1968, being named one of the most likely to
succeed and most talented from his class. He attended college at Northwest Alabama
State Technical College majoring in Barbering and received his diploma in 1971.
He opened his own business in 1979 - His & Hers Style Shop, now located next
to Alabama Power. Through the years Steve has accomplished many things. He is a certified SCUBA diver and certified small craft pilot. His love of Winston County and its history has allowed him to become one of the leading area historians. He has written many feature articles for the Northwest Alabamian, provided lectures and classes on the rich history this area to area schools and interested groups. Hs is the Commander of the Winston County Greys camp 1788, Northwest Brigade Commander for the Alabama Division Sons of Confederate Veterans. Steve is a vital working member of the Haleyville Historical Society. Recent activities include the reenactment Civil War battles, including the firing of cannons and the placement of grave markers identifying Civil War Veterans. |
